Продолжаю знакомить вас с интересными английскими идиомами. Для сегодняшнего поста я отобрала десяток выражений, связанных со временем . Про любовь , слезы и смех можно почитать в предыдущих постах.

Чем вы занимаетесь на работе? Лично я фрилансер, поэтому моя зарплата напрямую зависит от того, работаю я или бью баклуши. А некоторые просиживают штаны в офисе и имитируют рабочий процесс, ежеминутно поглядывая на часы в ожидании долгожданного окончания рабочего дня. Для таких англичане придумали специальное название - clock watcher - то есть, нерадивый работник, только и ждущий, когда можно будет свалить с работы.

Если продолжать тему работы: у всех, наверно, время от времени случается аврал - когда нужно срочно закончить какой-нибудь отчет, выполнить перевод, дописать статью, а сроки поджимают, и начальник (заказчик, редактор - нужное подчеркнуть) дышит в затылок, ожидая результатов. По-английски это называется «work against the clock » - торопиться сделать что-то вовремя, успеть в срок. Когда время, отведенное на выполнение дела, заканчивается, можно еще сказать, что вы «run out of time », то есть, опаздываете, не успеваете, не укладываетесь в срок.

Замечательный профессор Преображенский говорил: «Успевает всюду тот, кто никуда не торопится». Последуем же его совету и не станем торопиться - «take your time », как говорят англичане. Не спешите!

Если же вы в последний момент (in the nick of time ) все доделали, закончили, успели, и все довольны, значит, вы «ударили по часам» - именно так буквально переводится выражение «beat the clock », которое означает «успеть сделать что-то вовремя». Теперь самое время (high time ), чтобы расслабиться, развлечься и хорошо повеселиться. Have a whale of a time - значит отлично провести время, и киты тут ни при чем.

Есть еще пара выражений, которые хоть и не о времени, но имеют слово «time» в своем составе, поэтому я решила включить их в эту подборку. Первое - do time , в буквальном переводе что-то вроде «делать время». В неформальной речи это означает сидеть в тюрьме, отбывать срок. И еще один глагол: two- time . Этим занимаются те, кто ведет двойную игру, чаще всего изменяет в сердечных делах.
