Introduction

Trademark "Eurotef-M" is a Belarusian invention. The device is based on the TC300 phone developed by Hitachi for Deutsche Telecom. A small batch of devices was sold in Italy by Pirelli under the brand name Discus DP-L10. Based on an agreement between Douche Telecom and Promsvyaz, it was Russified software and local assembly from ready-made kits has been established. An experimental batch of phones went on sale in Minsk for about $180.

Positioning

According to the developer, such a telephone can replace conventional landline and mobile phones. The built-in Wi-Fi module and the ability to work with the SIP protocol make it relevant for use as a VoIP phone. The potential audience for the device are users who do not need multimedia features, but require an inexpensive solution that can be used both at home as a regular phone and just as a mobile device. At the same time, the main emphasis is on Internet telephony with the ability to connect to Wi-Fi access points. From the point of view of the year of release of the model, the solution is not revolutionary, however, in Russia and the CIS countries, relatively cheap models with a Wi-Fi module and support for the SIP protocol have not been seen before. Therefore, the very fact of the appearance of such a device with a Russified menu is interesting.

Appearance, design, controls

base unit

The base unit resembles a black notebook 350x103 mm in size and 15 mm thick at the narrow and 35 mm wide. By analogy with the book, the endpaper is made of silvery plastic, dividing the body of the block into two equal parts.

In the narrow part of the case, there are LED indicators for power, Wi-Fi module, PSTN cable connection and turning on the handset registration mechanism. On the opposite (thickened) side there is a power button for the base unit, a paging button, a connector for connecting a power source and a telephone cable, and a reset button recessed into the case. At the top is a small swivel antenna for the Wi-Fi module. The top cover of the unit has ventilation slots. On the bottom of the case there are two recesses for the stand, on which the base unit is installed. The stand has a serial number, MAC address and a WPA2 key for connecting the handset. On the underside of the stand there are rubber inserts that prevent the base unit from sliding on the surface. When assembled, the block looks, I would say, even elegant and does not spoil the interior at all.

Handset

The color scheme of the handset continues the theme of the base unit. The body of the handset is made of black plastic, along the side faces there is a silvery strip that divides the device into upper and lower parts. The plastic of the back panel is matte, resistant to abrasion, fingerprints on it are almost invisible. The tube is a typical monoblock with medium dimensions and weight (110x48x19 mm, weight 95 g). If you look at the handset in profile, you can clearly see that the top panel is larger than the bottom panel, so the device has the shape of a boat. The plastic of the front panel matches the color of the case plastic, but differs from it in texture. The keypad and screen bezel are made of glossy plastic, black color hides fingerprints, so the phone looks neat for a long time. At the bottom of the front panel is a microphone hole.

Design elements include a silver insert at the top and the same silver four-way navigation key. The confirmation button inside is black. The logo of the original device has been replaced by a not very accurate sticker with the logo "Eurotem-M", let's write off this sloppiness to the experimental batch. The absence of Russian characters on the keyboard has the same reason. Currently, Promsvyaz is solving the issue of manufacturing a front panel with its own logo and a bilingual keyboard. Although the issue with the application of the Russian font can be resolved with the help of additional laser engraving.

The control elements of the handset include the camera and volume buttons located on the left side face. Communication connectors are located on the bottom of the phone. For recharging and connecting a computer, a standard miniUSB connector is used, next to it there is a 2.5 mm jack for connecting a headset. In the right corner of the lower face there is an eyelet for attaching a strap.

The rear panel houses the camera lens, self-portrait mirror, and a speaker grille. All these elements are located on a silvery plastic insert. The battery compartment cover is tightly fixed on the body, to remove it, you need to make a noticeable effort. The only complaint about the build quality may be a small vertical play in the fastening of this cover, but it is practically not noticeable. In all other respects, the phone is a monolith with no squeaks during compression.

The stand for the handset also belongs to the design elements. It is completely black, small in size (73x64x25 mm) and has the shape of a reverse boat (the lower part is larger than the upper one). There are rubber pads on the bottom of the stand, so the stand does not slip on the surface of the table. The stand has two paired miniUSB connectors. You can connect a handset charger or a regular miniUSB cable from a PC to the connector on the back of the stand. In addition to data pairing, this solution allows you to charge the handset directly on the stand. The glass for the handset ensures its stable position, an additional fixing element is a miniUSB connector inside the glass, through which recharging is performed.

The small size and weight of the tube make it comfortable to carry in any pocket, be it trousers or a shirt. In stationary conditions, it is most convenient to place the handset on a stand, providing additional charging. This position is also common for DECT phones, so placing the handset on the stand is almost a reflex.

Interaction between handset and base unit

Using the Wi-Fi wireless protocol to communicate between the handset and the base unit is non-standard solution, which has its pros and cons. Let's start with the cons. This solution significantly limits the distance from which the handset can be connected to the base unit to make calls to the fixed network. In the conditions of large-panel houses, signal shielding occurs already at a distance of 10-15 meters. And this is significantly less than the distance at which DECT handsets can operate. Many services that are familiar to standard DECT devices also become unavailable. At the same time, some functions provided by the operator are retained. For example, if the CLIP service is available, the calling telephone number is correctly transmitted to the handset. Simultaneously with the number, the name of the subscriber can be played if it is available in the contacts.

The advantage of this solution is also obvious. The Wi-Fi-enabled handset becomes a VoIP terminal that can be used for Internet telephony via any available Wi-Fi hotspot. Here we have to return to the cons again. The base unit does not have an Ethernet connector, so you cannot connect it directly to the router. Accordingly, it cannot be used to access the Internet of other devices available in the home arsenal. Up to five handsets can be connected to one base unit.

When testing the apparatus, an inverse problem also arose. In theory, the base unit can be "friends" with any mobile phone having a Wi-Fi module. And use it to make calls to a fixed network. From the first time, it was possible to connect to the base module from a Nokia N81 8 Gb smartphone without any problems. But it was not possible to make a call to the fixed network. Apparently, specific settings for the SIP protocol in the Nokia phone are required. This question was asked to the specialists who provide support and localization of the device, but at the time of writing the review, the answer to it has not yet been received. Therefore, this part of the review will be supplemented after testing.

Display

The model is equipped with a 1.5-inch TFT screen with a resolution of 128x128 pixels. The display supports 64 thousand colors. By modern standards, this is not much, but given the price of the phone, this screen resolution is quite justified. The picture on the screen looks quite bright and saturated. In the sun, the screen dims noticeably, but the text remains readable. Five lines of text are placed on the screen, the upper and lower service lines are additionally displayed. The font size is large, the messages are read well. You can set an icon on the display from the list of preset pictures or select an image from the gallery. In addition, the screen brightness and backlight time can be adjusted from 10 to 60 seconds. If necessary, the backlight timer can be turned off. A feature of this model is the display on the screen of the signal level from the base unit (on the right side of the screen) and the GSM base station (on the left).

Keyboard

The keyboard block is quite traditional and has no additional keys. It includes a software block (2 software keys, a navigation key, send and end call buttons) and a numeric keypad. The navigation key is round, with a recess inside, which houses the confirmation button, the edge of the navigation key protrudes above the plane of the keyboard block, so navigation and transition between menu items does not cause problems.

All keys of the numeric keypad are approximately the same size, rectangular in shape. The buttons have a noticeable stroke with a noticeable click at the end. The tactile keys of the numeric keypad do not differ very well, so blind typing without getting used to it can be difficult. An important function has been added to the left software key. When making a call with it, you can force the call type to be WLAN (PSTN) or GSM. The keyboard backlight is uniform, white color, characters in the dark are read well.

Battery

The phone has a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1050 mAh. Claimed battery life - up to 6 hours of talk time and up to 7 days in standby mode. When using the device as a PSTN- and GSM-telephone with an hour of calls via GSM and about 2 hours via a fixed line, the battery lasts for three days. When using it as a VoIP-terminal, the operating time is reduced slightly - after about two days, recharging is required. Considering that in working time the phone can be on a stand connected to a power source or a PC, the battery life is no longer critical, since the phone can always be recharged. When the battery is removed (for example, to replace the SIM card), the time and date settings are not retained.

USB, Wi-Fi, communication options

The handset lacks Bluetooth, so there is simply no need to talk about the respective profiles. The USB port is used for recharging and for communication with a PC. The corresponding utility is included on the disk. With it, between your phone and PC, you can synchronize contacts and transfer multimedia files. When you connect the USB cable, your phone starts charging automatically.

WLAN settings

To connect to a base station, you need to select a profile for connecting to the base unit in the WLAN profile settings item. In the tested model, this profile is called TC300. To connect the handset to another access point, you must select any of the available profiles. Access to profile editing appears in edit mode (left soft key). In the first SSID & security item, select the SSID item and start searching for access points, select one of the found points (if the phone is near the base station, then one of the access points will be Sinus TC300) and return to the security settings. Here you need to select the encryption protocol and enter the key. After that, you need to edit the SIP profile. There are two options in the drop down menu - TC300 and VoIP1. To work via the Internet, you need to edit the VoIP1 profile. You are required to enter a username, password, email address type account [email protected] The e-mail address is incorrectly specified in the phone menu in this item. Then the domain name is entered (for the SIPNET provider, this is spinet.ru). Other fields that require the SIPNET server address can be filled with the same parameter. For other providers, registration data must be clarified additionally. One of the important settings is the choice of voice codec. The phone supports G.711U, G.711A, G.726-32 and G.726-24. The choice of a specific voice codec is determined by the quality of the connection, and it must be checked in a specific network. When using the G.726-32 codec in the SIPNET network, a very decent quality of communication was obtained without delays, fading and echo. It is possible that a different voice codec will be more preferable in a different provider's network. The success of registration on the server of the VoIP telephony provider is very easy to check in the SIP status item. Upon successful registration, you will see the IP address of the registration server, given name, NAT status and selected codec. Accordingly, we receive three types of calls - a call to a fixed network (TC300 WLAN profile), a VoIP call (a WLAN profile configured for an available access point with Internet access) and a regular GSM call. The choice between WLAN and GSM calls can be forced using the left soft key. You can use your phone to make calls over a Wi-Fi connection without a SIM card. In this case, the call type is determined by the selected WLAN profile. In budget models, working offline without a SIM card is quite rare, so this opportunity was a pleasant surprise. At the same time, the phone also fully retains its functionality in the part that does not require GSM.

Java

The phone does not support Java MIDP1-2, which is a significant disadvantage. Accordingly, you can not install additional applications and games.

Multimedia features

The phone has a camera with a resolution of 0.36 megapixels. Accordingly, the maximum resolution of images does not exceed 640x480 pixels. Video shooting is not supported. By today's standards, this is even below the acceptable limit. The camera is only suitable for taking pictures that can be sent via MMS. The sound possibilities are just as scarce. Only MID format is supported. There is no information about the number of polyphonic voices in the data, but the volume of the music is enough even for noisy places, and the melodies sound quite pleasant. You can install additional melodies in your phone or delete unnecessary ones using the communication utility.

Menu

The main menu is represented by a matrix of 12 icons, nine of them are placed on the screen at the same time. All submenus have horizontal lists, some options are edited via the left software key. Menu navigation is done without any frills. When moving through the menu using the navigation key, the selected item is highlighted, cyclic scrolling of the lists is implemented.

Phone book

To display a list of all contacts from the standby mode, press the right soft key and the search bar. The search itself exists only figuratively - when you enter a letter sequence, the found matches are not immediately displayed. When creating a contact, you immediately need to specify the save location - in the phone's memory or on the SIM card. There is only one name field, you can enter 20 characters into it, including spaces. For each contact, a record of a mobile, home, office and VoIP phone is available. Each type has its own icon. In addition, you can fill in the email and home address fields. You can set your own ringtone and photo for each contact. When a call comes in, the photo is shown as a small icon at the bottom of the screen. Groups are supported, their total number cannot exceed 20. For a group, you can set a common ringtone for incoming calls and messages, but if an individual ringtone is set for a contact in the group, then it takes precedence. The group window displays its name, ring tone, message tone, and group size. When this item is opened, a group name list is displayed. The capacity of the phone book is 500 names, this number does not depend on the number of fields filled in for each contact. For any filled telephone field, you can select the type of call ring - GSM or WLAN. There can be up to 8 names in the speed dial list. Speed dialing can also be assigned to a specific name number. The menu item "My number" displays information about the number registered on the network for this phone. The SIP ID registered on the server is displayed correctly, but the phone cannot determine the number when roaming.

Call lists

Call lists are shown separately. Each type (received, missed, outgoing) can store up to 20 calls of each type. For a single entry, the detailed view shows the time and duration of the call. With several calls from the same number, their number is summed up, opposite the name the number of calls is indicated. There is no unified list of calls with corresponding icons.

Messages

The phone has a division into SMS and MMS messages. The phone memory can store 50 SMS, 20 MMS messages of each type (received, sent, templates, etc.). For MMS, there is a limit on the size of received messages. It cannot exceed one megabyte. The same number and size limits apply to email messages.

The built-in MMS message editor is simplified as much as possible. You can insert a picture, a sound file, a business card, or a calendar event. USSD requests do not work when roaming.

WAP

The only protocol that correctly supports Cyrillic is WAP2. The built-in browser can also open pages in HTML format, but there are a lot of errors on them.

Organizer

The Organizer section contains four applications.

Alarm

Five independent alarm clocks, each with the following features:

  • daily call
  • weekday calls
  • weekend calls
  • call without repeat

For each type of call, only the time is configured.

Calendar

The simplest calendar in which you can simply save reminders without specifying a due time and a reminder. When you open the calendar, these reminders are not displayed on the screen. In order to see them, you need to open the desired date.

To-do list

Also the most minimal features. You can simply add the necessary cases to the sheet without the possibility of marking the completion or assigning the case to a specific date.

Power timer

Allows you to turn off and turn on the phone according to a specified schedule.

Applications

This menu item contains small applications that can be described in one line.

Calculator. Allows you to perform four arithmetic operations.

Currency Converter. Enter the value of the exchange rate and the amount of the required currency. The output is the amount that must be spent when converting.

Stopwatch. Allows you to measure time with fixing intermediate results.

Countdown timer. Normal timer. The time until the signal is set and the timer starts. The melody of the signal is set in the settings.

Time Zones. Setting the time zone allows you to quickly move from one time zone to another.

Games

Since Java is not supported in the device, we have to be content with two installed games. The first game is "Egg Saving". It is required to throw an egg into the upper basket. The second game is "Submarine". With the help of depth charges, you need to shoot submarines and torpedoes. Both games do not represent anything particularly interesting and only allow you to pass the time.

Gallery

The gallery contains options for displaying images and playing melodies. Here you can also look at the amount of available memory, both in percentage terms and in kilobytes.

Settings

A specific feature of this model is the network preference settings. Accordingly, the phone can be used for GSM or WLAN calls, which in turn are divided into calls to a fixed network or VoIP calls. The settings set the sound signals for calls, messages, alarm clock, timer and keypad sound. The interface language, GPRG connection properties, and other common functions are also set here. In answer mode, you can set the handset to pick up automatically. The usual security features are also concentrated in the settings - setting up a PIN code request, a handset code. The option to automatically lock the keyboard is also enabled here. All settings have a minimum set of parameters that provide a standard set of security and functionality of the device.

Impression

The connection quality in this model is quite good. modern level, there are no problems with establishing a connection, the quality of voice transmission over GSM, PSTN and VoIP networks. The volume of the call is enough for good audibility in different conditions. The vibrating alert is average in strength, and if the handset is in the outer pocket, it can be easily missed. In terms of the set of functional features in its price category, the device has practically no competitors, and in terms of the ability to make calls to a fixed network, it is the only one available. However, low functional saturation can do the device a disservice. Those for whom the presence of multimedia features is important will be deterred by functionality, and for the category of consumers who prefer inexpensive solutions, the VoIP telephony feature set will be redundant. As a result, there remains a small layer of consumers who will buy a device specifically for VoIP calls as a second handset. Which can be simultaneously used as a GSM and PSTN terminal. The most surprising thing is that the phone appeared in Belarus, where there are simply no own SIP telephony operators. More interesting is the positioning of the phone on the markets of the CIS countries, where this model will be unique. Ultimately, successful sales of the phone are possible with significant marketing efforts, high-quality adaptation and price reduction. As one of these options, we can theoretically consider the offer of this phone for distribution to a large mobile operator or retailer under its own brand.
