Poland has one of the highest in Europe statistical indicators road accidents.

Since 2001, large-scale construction of new motorways and repair of existing ones have been launched in Poland. This became especially noticeable after Poland, together with Ukraine, won the right to host the 2012 European Football Championship.

For many car travelers from countries former USSR Poland is a transit country. The time spent crossing Poland directly depends on the condition of the roads.

And if we also take into account that in Poland there is a huge number of trucks (among road travelers Poland is referred to only as the "homeland of trucks") that greatly slow down the movement, then information about the repair and construction of roads becomes far from superfluous when planning a route.

The map shows sections of the repaired roads with the timing of its completion.

On the this moment 1,428 km have already been put into operation, which is 80% of the existing motorways. Another 356 km is under planning, construction or reconstruction.

green active sections of roads are highlighted in color. red plots under construction and areas under repair are highlighted in color.

Motorway A1

Motorway A1(Autostrada A1: Gdańsk - Torun - Łódź - Częstochowa - Gliwice - Gorzyczki) has a length of 565 km. Of these, 433 km (77%) were put into operation. The motorway starts in northern Poland in Gdańsk and merges into the Czech D1 motorway in the south.

Currently, 2 continuous sections have been put into operation on the A1 motorway. These are the sections Gdansk - Piotrkow Trybunalski (345 km), Pyrzowice - Gorzyczki (93 km).

The section Piotrkow Trybunalski - Częstochowa (82 km) is under design. The exact timing of the work has not yet been determined. Despite this, the road in this section has 2 lanes in each direction and is quite comfortable for traffic.

Section Częstochowa - Pyrzowice (57 km) is under reconstruction. Completion is scheduled for June 2019.

After entering the Czech Republic, do not forget to stop at the first gas station and buy a vignette.

Motorway A2

Motorway A2(Autostrada A2: Świecko - Poznań - Łódź - Warszawą - Siedlce - Kukuryki) has a length of 610 km, of which 475 km (78%) have been put into operation. It starts in the west on the Polish-German border (autobahn A12, Germany) and in the east passes into the Belarusian highway M1.

Now 2 continuous sections have been put into operation on the A2 motorway: Świecko - Warszawą (450 km) and Choszczówka Stojecka - Kałuszyn (21 km long bypass road around Mińsk Mazowiecki).

The construction of the Lubelska-Choszczówka Stojecka section with a length of 15 km is in progress. Commissioning is scheduled for summer 2020.

Construction on the Kałuszyn – Kukuryki section (Belarusian-Polish border) is planned to start after 2020.

It takes about 4 hours to travel from Warsaw to the German border.

There are two filling stations in front of the border with Germany. But be careful on weekends and don't put off refueling until the last minute. At this time there are many German tourists returns home and there can be very long queues at these gas stations. In Germany, gasoline is 20-30 cents more expensive.

When entering Poland from Germany motorway A2 (Świecko) Polish police often measure speed. You can see where they are in the video below.

You can watch other videos on our channel at YouTube.

Motorway A4

Motorway A4(Autostrada A4: Jędrzychowice - Wrocław - Katowice - Kraków - Rzeszów - Korczowa) has a length of 672 km and was fully completed in mid-2016. It starts in the west at the Polish-German border (autobahn A4, Germany) and in the east passes into the Ukrainian highway M10.

It takes about 6 hours to travel along the entire motorway from the border of Ukraine to the German border.

Highway S8

Regional Road 8(Droga krajowa nr 8: Suwałki - Białystok - Warszawa - Piotrków Trybunalski - Wrocław - Kudowa-Zdrój) has a length of 804 km. It starts in the northeast on the Polish-Lithuanian border (A5, Lithuania) and in the southwest passes into the Czech road 33.

Highway S8(Droga ekspresowa S8: Wrocław - Łódź - Warsaw - Białystok) is part of the regional road 8 with a length of 565 km, of which 520 km (92%) have been put into operation.

The longest continuous section of the S8 Wrocław - Rzgów expressway is 226 km long.

In October 2018, the construction of the road between Warsaw and Bialystok was fully completed. Now it will take less than 2 hours to drive this section.

The construction of the Radziejowice – Paszków section near Warsaw is scheduled for completion in mid-2019.

Sometimes during the daytime drive through Warsaw in 10-15 minutes.

The minimum period for a passenger car (less than 3.5 tons) is 7 days (3 euros). A vignette for 30 days costs 7 euros, for 90 days - 13 euros, for a year - 28 euros.

Failure to pay the fare is subject to a fine of 50 to 100 euros. And this does not eliminate the need to buy a vignette.

There are also a few places where you will have to pay extra for the use of roads/bridges/crossings.

Serbia

Belarusians do not need a visa to visit this country (but there are restrictions). There are also often cars with our numbers. Drivers should keep in mind that you will have to pay for the use of the main highways leading to Belgrade.

The fee is charged at special points located on the tracks. As in Poland, paid sections are closed with barriers (you won’t be able to drive past the booth). You can pay both in cash and by card. The cost is 0.03 euros per 1 km.

Bulgaria

Many Belarusians go to the beaches of Nessebar and Sozopol in the summer by car. Experienced travelers know that in Bulgaria foreigners are required to pay for the use of roads. The amounts are small: a week - 8 euros, a month - 15 euros, three months - 28 euros.

The greatest difficulty is associated with the purchase of a vignette, which must be placed in the lower right corner of the windshield. Most tourists tend to buy it immediately at the border, where there are special points. As a result, queues are formed. Although if you drive just a few hundred meters, then this can be done in a relaxed atmosphere.

You can also buy a vignette at some gas stations (keep in mind that not all gas station networks have the right to do so).

They say that from next year it will be possible to pay for the use of Bulgarian roads via the Internet.

Sweden

Another country where Belarusians can get by car (using a ferry, in particular) is Sweden. In our publications, we often refer to the Scandinavian experience as the best in road safety. What about road tolls? It is not charged. That is, the tracks can be used free of charge. The only exception is traffic on bridges passing through several straits.

However, in the two most major cities- Stockholm and Gothenburg - a fee has been introduced, which is designed to reduce the traffic load on the busiest days - from Monday to Friday (and on work time). The need to pay it is assigned not only to the Swedes, but also to the guests of the cities.

The invoice is issued monthly by a special service.

Finland

Again, like its neighbor, Finland does not consider it necessary to charge car owners for the use of roads. This rule applies to both Finns and foreigners.

Italy

The Italian road toll system still needs to be sorted out. The highway system is toll. The amount depends on the road, mileage and type of vehicle. Noticed? There are too many components that affect the final amount. For example, for 355 km of motorway from Rimini to Palmanova, our colleagues paid 25 euros during a business trip.

The technology is simple. When leaving the highway, you need to take a special ticket (otherwise the barrier will not open), and at the exit, return it to the machine and pay the specified amount. All guidebooks note that foreigners in cars should not drive into the yellow Telepass lane, but it is better to choose the lane marked in white: cards and cash are accepted there.

The quality of Polish autobahns and high-speed roads is noticeably different from our domestic ones, as in Poland old autobahns are immediately repaired and new autobahns are built. As of December 31, 2014, the length of Polish roads is 3,157 km, including 1,552 km of autobahns and 1,605 km of express roads.

In August 2015, the Polish government announced the National Road Construction Program 2023. Since that time, 54 tenders have been announced for the construction of high-speed roads, the total length of which is 650 km. Also, 65 contracts were signed for almost 950 km of new roads. The value of the contracts is more than 26 billion zlotys.

Designation of highways in Poland

A1 - Autobahns are marked with the letter A and a number (eg A1)

S3 - Expressways are marked with the letter S and a number (for example S3)

Toll roads (autobahns) in Poland: how and where to pay

Since maintaining existing and building new express roads is not cheap, some sections of Poland's autobahns have to pay tolls. The fare on these sections depends both on the type of vehicle and on the distance travelled.

There are two ways to pay for motorways in Poland:

1. Payment is made at checkpoints located directly at the entrance or exit from the toll section of the autobahn. In most of these checkpoints there are operators who, after paying the fare, raise the barrier. For the comfort of drivers, payment can be made in cash in three currencies (PLN, USD and EUR) or by bank card, but only at those checkpoints where there is an inscription - "Karty kredytowe"

2. In the second case, there is no cashier at the checkpoints of toll roads in Poland, but there are only vending machines that issue a ticket at the entrance to the toll section and after receiving it, a barrier rises. The ticket must be kept with you until the end of the journey, since payment is made on it at the exit from the toll section of the road.

The fare for travel on the Polish autobahn is calculated based on 0.10 PLN/km for vehicles with a total weight of less than 3.5 tons. To date, toll highways in Poland are only A1, A2 and A4. For cars and buses with a total mass of more than 3.5 tons, there are more paid sections and payment is provided in the viaTOLL electronic system, information about which you will find on our website.

On some motorways in Poland, you will be asked to pay at the entrance and at the end of the toll section.

To date, three motorways in Poland are paid for motorcycles and passenger cars:

  1. Autobahn A1
  2. Autobahn A2
  3. Autobahn A4

Prices on these autobahns are slightly different and depend on the total mileage of the road segment.

Construction of the A4 autobahn to Krakow in Poland

The road between Rzeszow and Jaroslaw is the last, unfinished element of the A4 autobahn, which connects the Western and Eastern borders of Poland.

The completed autobahn A4 will connect the two edges of Poland. This section passes through the districts of the cities of Rzeszow, Lancut and Perevorsk, and is the last unfinished on the A4 autobahn. The autobahn starts on the border with Germany in Evdrichovice and passes near Zgorzelec through Legnica, Wroclaw, Opole, Gliwice, Kotowice, Krakow, Tarnow, Rzeszow to the customs crossing with Ukraine in Korchov. This autobahn plays key role in transportation nationally and internationally, connecting to the autobahn that runs from German Dresden. The main goal of the investment is to help develop the country's economy and improve the quality of life of citizens by creating an efficient, safe and sustainable transport system in international traffic.

Autobahn A4 from Lviv to Krakow

The autobahn, upon completion of the construction of this section, will connect almost all the most important industrial centers for Poland in the southern part of the country. The total length of the A4 autobahn in Poland will be 670 km. The autobahn is scheduled to open in August 2016. The section from the Ukrainian-Polish border to Krakow will have a length of about 250 km, and after the opening, the passage of the A4 autobahn will become paid from 2018. If we take the average price of payment for high-speed roads in Poland, it turns out that for a section to Krakow you will have to pay about 50 zlotys. But there is always an alternative - travel on free Polish roads.

Updates 20.07.2016

Opening of Autobahn A4 to Krakow

Autobahn A4, which starts from the Ukrainian-Polish border (customs crossing Korchowa-Krakovets) and leads to Krakow, and further to the west of Poland through Katowice, Opole, Wroclaw to the connection with the German motorway of the same name, finally finished building, and on July 20, 2016 of the year at 10:00 am, its last unfinished segment Yaroslav-Rzeszow was officially opened to cars. The opening of the section and the full functioning of the autobahn was a pleasant surprise for users: there was no data on this anywhere, and according to preliminary information, full access to the A4 autobahn should have been provided in August 2016. Now, a significant intensity is predicted on the newly opened section of the A4 autobahn Yaroslav-Rzeszow movement, because on already built sections it beats all records and expectations. The segment of the A4 autobahn from the border to Krakow will be free, this is due to the fact that this segment has just been completed and it takes time for it to become a full-fledged motorway. In particular, infrastructure needs to be developed for this, there are still not enough MOPs (Miejsc Obsługi Podróżnych), hotels, gastronomic points and gas stations. It is planned to improve the road and make it a full-fledged highway, and, therefore, receive money for using it, since 2018, but for now, Ukrainians will be able to travel 250 kilometers to Krakow quickly and comfortably for free. For information on prices for using the autobahn on its other sections, look in the sections below.

Section of motorway A4 Yaroslav-Rzeszow

A section of the A4 autobahn Yaroslav-Rzeszow, 41.2 kilometers long, which has been under construction since 2010, on July 20, 2016, was put into operation and opened for free transport. A4 is Poland's first high-standard motorway completed to completion, which combines it with two neighboring countries: Ukraine in the east and Germany in the west. The construction of the last section of the A4 autobahn Yaroslav-Rzeszow lasted 6 years, at first the autobahn was supposed to be completely completed in 2012, but partly due to insufficient funding, and partly due to soil conditions, the contractor postponed the completion of the construction of the motorway on this segment. In 2014, the contractor was changed, and after 2 years we have a comfortable Polish autobahn connecting the Ukrainian border with the most important cities in Poland, the use of which to Krakow is free. True, in October 2016 the construction of service roads will continue (their planned total length along the A4 autobahn is 78 kilometers) and reservoirs, however, despite this, the only obstacle for drivers will be the narrowing of the main road in a section of about 2 km to the Yaroslav- Zapad", which will be liquidated in August-September. The funds invested in the construction of the motorway are PLN 985,000,000.

The section of the A4 Autobahn Yaroslav-Rzeszow is a titanic project in terms of logistics and technology. There were days when more than 1000 people and more than 250 managers and supervisors worked on the laying of the roadbed here. The magnitude of the construction of these incomplete 42 kilometers of the road is best demonstrated by the numbers. So, the section of the A4 autobahn Yaroslav-Rzeszow is:

  • 647 hectares of roadway, corresponding to the size of 774 professional football fields.
  • 986,000 m² of crushed stone for asphalt, this area is more than twice the size of the Vatican.
  • 8,000,000 cubic meters of land for the main highway. This is equivalent to 14,000,000 tons of material. In order to transport this, 560,000 dump trucks would have to be filled to the brim, the queue of which would stretch for about 7600 km.
  • 624,000 tons of asphalt, which corresponds to the weight of 13.5 Titanic ships.
  • 141500 m of steel barriers and fenders, which is more than the circumference of Malta, the smallest of the EU countries.

Update 06/22/2017

Since October, the length of toll roads in Poland has increased

Since October 1, 2016, the network of Polish toll roads of the viaTOLL system has increased by 150 kilometers. New sections of roads in seven Polish voivodships, namely in the Lower Silesian (dolnośląskie), Lodz (łódzkie), Mazowieckie (mazowieckie), Podkarpackie (podkarpackie), Silesian (śląskie), Świętokrzyskie (swiętokrzyskie) and West Pomeranian (zachodniopomorskie) have become paid for drivers of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons, as well as drivers of buses of any weight.
The innovations concern mainly road sections on the A1 motorways (near Łódź) and A4 (in front of Rzeszow), as well as on the S1 expressways (south of Bielsko-Biała) and S8 (near Warsaw and Wrocław).
Following the changes, the total length of the Polish road network covered by the electronic toll system has increased to 3,300 kilometers.

From July 9, 2017, another 360 kilometers of Polish roads in six voivodeships will become tollable via the viaTOLL system. Read more.

Recall that the viaTOLL electronic system appeared in Poland in July 2011. It is mandatory for all vehicles whose total mass exceeds 3.5 tons. Drivers of such cars pay from 16 to 53 pennies per kilometer. The price is affected primarily by how much a particular car pollutes the environment with exhaust gases. All funds raised through the viaTOLL system are used for the further development and modernization of the road infrastructure in Poland.
You can read more about the viaTOLL system in our material

Live cameras showing the queue at the border on the A4 highway at the Korchova-Krakovets checkpoint

Autobahn A4 starts in Poland immediately after leaving the Krakovets-Korczova checkpoint. You can find out if there are long queues at the border by viewing the cameras online on our website. Three webcams have been installed at the Krakovets-Korchova checkpoint, broadcasting the situation at the border in real time. One camera is installed on the territory of the Ukrainian customs, and it makes it possible to understand whether there is a queue and how long it is before entering the customs territory from Ukraine.

Two more live webcams were installed on the Ukrainian-Polish border on the territory of the Polish customs.

One of them shows a queue on neutral territory between Ukraine and Poland. If you watch the broadcast of the video from the border for a little longer, you can draw some conclusions about the speed of passing cars at the present time. Also on this camera you can see if there is a queue from Poland to Ukraine on the territory of the checkpoint already on the Ukrainian side of the customs.

Another camera broadcasts a live image from the section of the A4 motorway just before entering the customs from Poland. Currently, on this camera you can see the queue in front of the gate of the checkpoint, on the left there is a queue for trucks, and on the A4 autobahn there is a queue for cars and buses. The queue on the autobahn is divided into 3 different passes - the queue for those who will issue Tax Free, the queue for those who travel along the green corridor and the pass for buses.

In accordance with the Law on Toll Highways and the Republican Road Fund, drivers of vehicles are required to pay for toll roads in Poland. There are two toll collection systems in the country: manual system and electronic - viaTOLL. Vehicle drivers can choose* the most convenient way to pay for travel (payment system) depending on the routes.

The manual payment system operates on the section of the A2 motorway Konin - Strykow and the section of the A4 motorway Bielany-Wrocławskie - Sośnica. Upon entering a section of the motorway, the driver of a vehicle receives a ticket, on the basis of which, upon exiting the motorway, the toll is paid at the toll collection point. Payment is collected at collection points. The fare depends on the type of vehicle and distance.
