Every business involves setting goals. Since this book is about self-management, we want to take a closer look at the meaning of goal setting in the personal realm. Goal setting means looking to the future. Orientation and concentration of our forces and activity on what must be achieved. Thus, the goal describes the end result. It's about not about what you do, but about what you do. Goals challenge you and motivate you to take action. Without goals, there is no Evaluation criterion by which you can measure your work. Goals, in addition, are also a scale for assessing what has been achieved. Even the best working method is worthless if you do not clearly and unambiguously define what you want in advance.

Goals are the "instigators" of our actions, the motives that determine our activity. If any individual has set a goal for himself, then a state of tension arises as a result of this, which acts as a driving force and which disappears only when the goal is achieved.

To set goals, you need to think about the future. Traditional thinking in terms of particular tasks is fraught with the fact that you get lost in the details. Thinking in terms of goals promotes the subordination of the particular to the whole.

As you do your daily work, ask yourself this question:

Goal setting is an ongoing process because goals are not set once and for all. They may change over time, for example if it turns out during the follow-up process that previous perceptions were fundamentally wrong, or that requests were over or under.

Knowing your goals and consistently striving for them means focusing your energy on things that really matter, instead of wasting your energy in vain.

It is especially difficult to think of ordering, as if compiling a numbered list so familiar to our eyes. The ray diagram helps to display thoughts in the form that most closely matches the natural way of human thinking, namely, jumping from one subject to another.

Take a blank sheet of paper, write your name in the center and circle it. Circle the name around the key aspects of your life that you intend to reflect on, for example: “Work”, “Family”, “Leisure”, “Social activities”, “Religion”, etc. Also circle them and connect them with rays to the central circle . Turn to each of the outer circles in turn and note next to it any thoughts you have on this aspect. Connect each mental thesis with the circle to which it relates, whether it is the closest in location or any other. Do not try to think in terms of goals, state everything that comes to mind. As a result, a construction of circles and multidirectional lines will be built on paper (Fig. 3).

The most important themes will begin to emerge by themselves. If the diagram gets too complicated, take one of the circles, for example, the “Money” circle, transfer it to the center of another sheet and continue the development of the plot (Fig. 4).

When thoughts run dry and constructions are completed, take a look at your diagrams and you will see where you need to focus your efforts. You will get an impulse to think about your life, about what you really expect from it. As a result, life goals as such will not take shape, but you will look at life in perspective and liberate the process of thinking.

If you want to focus more on one subject, for example, on a professional career, place a “Work” circle in the center of the sheet, place the names of people related to it and all its stages around it. Or start with one person, such as your boss, and think about every aspect of your professional activity.

4. Balance of successes and failures

Once you've determined, "Where do I want to?", consider asking, "Where am I?" You need to analyze your personal strengths and weaknesses. To this end, let's take a look at your life curve again and, with the help of the following exercise, identify your biggest successes so far in your work and personal life. What abilities, knowledge, experience, etc. were needed to achieve these successes? At the same time, try to establish those abilities that led to the corresponding result.

On the other hand, you must be clear about your weaknesses in order to avoid actions that may contribute to the manifestation of such "qualities", or take measures to get rid of these shortcomings.

Also make a balance of your biggest failures and defeats and note what lack of qualities they were due to. Think further about how you overcame this or that failure in your time.

Advantages and disadvantages

The next step is to group the advantages and disadvantages you have identified and highlight two or three major strengths and weaknesses. Such a "cut" of personal qualities is a prerequisite for planning further steps and measures to achieve goals.
