What are the benefits of the Internet for older people? How to "make friends" grandma or grandpa with the Internet? Why are old people afraid of the Internet?

Network of boarding houses for the elderly

Issues discussed in the material:

  • What are the benefits of the Internet for the elderly
  • How to "make friends" grandma or grandpa with the Internet
  • Why old people are afraid of the Internet

It is mistakenly believed that the Internet for the elderly is a completely useless and unnecessary thing, because it is almost impossible to teach grandparents to use it. This opinion, in fact, is not true, and examples of people who were able to help their elderly parents master the computer serve as proof of this. Moreover, this only benefited pensioners. In our article, we will tell you how to properly introduce the elderly to the global network.

With noticeable constancy, the Internet is criticized and discussed. This pattern is no longer surprising to anyone. Why is this happening? Most often, the Internet is blamed for the fact that because of it:

  • people began to read less, go to libraries and cinemas less often;
  • virtual communication began to take the place of live conversations and conversations.

However, these criticisms are more likely to concern the younger generation and children. If we think about another category of users - the elderly over 50 years old, it becomes clear that they can become very experienced users of both the computer and the Internet. As a rule, they differ from the younger generation in this matter in that they are able to rationally spend time on the Internet. Older people should not be reminded of the value of a temporary resource. They try to organize their day in such a way that they have time to take a walk in the fresh air, go to visit friends, work in the country, visit an interest club, and in the evening still have time to discuss family issues with children via Skype. Pensioners prefer to read their traditional printed publications bought at the kiosk, they also try to regularly purchase books and visit libraries. On the Internet, older people like to browse the news and get some information.

According to scientists, due to the regular use of the Internet, older people experience moral satisfaction, realizing the fact that, despite their age, they were able to master new technologies, study the necessary programs and processes. In addition, there is evidence that when older people are online, they have a reduced risk of strokes, and the aging process even slows down. Thus, the influence of the Internet on pensioners becomes extremely positive.

The Internet helps older people earn a small income. This income is not only a monetary supplement to the pension, but also helps to feel important, to feel fulfilled and in demand. For example, some older people are selling knitwear or embroidery on related websites. In addition, they can write articles to order or give online lessons via Skype. All this is an absolute plus of the Internet.

Employment at a computer for pensioners has large quantity advantages:

  • Wider social circle.

For many, retirement is accompanied by the fact that a person is, as it were, protected from outside world. He lives in his apartment, goes to the same shops, and his communication is limited to a very narrow circle of acquaintances. For many seniors, visiting guests, as well as talking on the phone, can be uncomfortable or too expensive. Communication of older people over the Internet can be free of charge and expressed both in written and oral form, in the form of a video link that connects with friends or relatives living in another city or country.

Among the advantages is to include new acquaintances in in social networks, on websites, forums, in interest groups dedicated to cooking, literature, various types of art, travel. In virtual communication, the age and appearance of the participants in the dialogue are not important. Much greater value has what the person says and what knowledge he has. In addition, you can make a virtual visit to any world famous museum. Most often, sites are designed so that the user can see the inside of the museum in real time and seem to be there.

  • It's easier to take care of your health.

It is worth noting that it is on the Internet that, usually, before other information resources, information about charlatans who sell counterfeit drugs or have a bad reputation in medical circles becomes available. For example, if you are advised to buy some miracle cure, and you doubt its effectiveness, just enter the name of the drug in search line, and it will immediately become clear what you are actually offered.

  • Life is getting busier.

The paradox is that, thanks to the emergence of the Internet in the lives of older people, they begin to visit more often. public places. After getting acquainted with the announcements of upcoming events, they instantly book tickets to the cinema, theater, and exhibitions. It would seem that just yesterday the pensioner was sitting at home, and today he is happily going out into the world.

  • Brain training.

Thanks to the development of new opportunities, intelligence develops well, the level of which may decrease somewhat with retirement. Scientists have found that when a person masters a computer after the age of 50, his brain cells work faster, new connections of neurons are created. All this helps to fight age-related memory impairment, trains quick wits and increases the speed of thinking.

The Internet is the best option for finding the right book or half-forgotten poem. On the network, you can watch TV shows and movies without advertising, and you can simply scroll through the news without listening to the already boring TV presenters.

The best prices for elderly care services in Moscow and the region!

  • Solving certain household issues.

In addition, the Internet for a pensioner is also a great opportunity to pay for an apartment and utilities, order medicine or food. In bad weather or on days when you feel unwell, taking advantage of these benefits is especially valuable.

Today, everyone who wants it has access to a computer. The younger generation gives their preference to improved models, and gives outdated ones to their parents. It turns out that the Internet for the elderly is in the public domain, but not everyone can use it correctly.

Thanks to the network, pensioners manage to spend their leisure time in a very exciting way. In online mode, crossword puzzles, chess games, watching any series and television programs are available for solving. You can also get new knowledge and communicate via Skype with relatives.

Many older people have appreciated this application and consider it a kind of video phone. (Skype is a program with which you can communicate with each other in real time, while seeing the interlocutor, no matter where on the planet he is).

It is not difficult for older people to learn how to handle any gadget. Some of them can master quite complex technologies, which even younger users sometimes cannot cope with. However, many elderly people experience difficulties where it is required to remember a clear algorithm of actions, and in such a situation they need outside help.

It is best to start teaching older people computer art from a tablet. Often, if we are talking about the computer, there are problems with how to turn it on and off, how to use the mouse. It is much easier for people of advanced years to remember how the gadget will turn off by pressing one button. Just as quickly they remember the rules for charging the tablet. However, it is worth choosing large-sized devices for pensioners, with a screen diagonal of 10 inches. We advise you to install a Wi-Fi router at home and refuse mobile Internet, which has its own limitations.

On the initial stage be prepared for the fact that an elderly student will need constant attention and advice. Do not tell him about several functions at once. It is better to choose a measured pace of learning. A pensioner should master the type of IP-telephony that you use, because then he will not worry about the cost of calls. Once old man master telephony, you can proceed to the story about the rules for using search engines. This is important, because in 99% of cases, elderly users need the Internet just to find the right information and make online calls. After that, you can begin to master the rest of the operations and teach the pensioner to use the computer on his own.

First, show the older person how to turn the computer on and off. In order to avoid multiple repetitions of the same algorithm, we recommend that you write all the actions on paper in the form of a numbered list and leave such an instruction next to the workplace.

Do not scare grandparents with stories that if you turn off the computer incorrectly, then an irreparable damage will occur, otherwise they will be very worried. Reassure them and explain that in case of an error, nothing terrible will happen, you can try pressing another button or try again. In the matter of learning, it is important not to be afraid and to try something new with joy.

We recommend that you prepare your desktop in advance, namely, remove irrelevant shortcuts, folders and files, leaving only what an elderly person will need. Give each label a name in Russian. Leave only the necessary bookmarks in the browser, show the elderly person how to use them.

To make a pensioner more interested in a new hobby, install games that are well known to him, including solitaire, chess, crossword puzzles, etc. Speed is not important in them, so you can thoughtfully make every move. Tell your relative about the rules of the game, stay around for a while and enjoy his first successes.

Leave a shortcut to the Internet browser on the desktop and set it to autorun, which will allow you to turn on the Yandex or Google search engines automatically. Show the elderly person how to use the search engine, where to enter the query, how to open and close the necessary resources after. For older people, this skill is easier if they are told in advance what points to pay attention to. Most often, older people are interested in news, recipes, favorite films, embroidery, cottage, conservation, collecting, TV shows, crossword puzzles, medicinal herbs. Delight is guaranteed for a pensioner when he realizes that they talk about the forecast not only on TV, but you no longer need to turn to a neighbor for the secret of the strawberry mousse recipe.

Be sure to install the Skype or Mail.ru agent programs on your computer and add the numbers of people with whom the elderly person communicates regularly in advance to the contact list. It can be children and grandchildren, friends and acquaintances, neighbors and former colleagues. Tell me how to make calls over the Internet. Explain that this method allows you not to spend money on the phone. It will be good if you set up the automatic inclusion of these programs.

No need to get annoyed if an older person constantly calls with the same questions. Just calmly explain to him all the algorithms of actions again. It is possible that your relative is just lonely and in this way he tries to make up for the lack of attention to himself.

Older people in most cases are afraid that because of their ignorance they will accidentally break something in the computer. It seems to many that the development of computer basics and the Internet is beyond their power. However, this is not at all the case. The relevance of the Internet for people in old age is huge. Today, many pensioners can easily take computer courses, work at a computer, and even earn some money from participating in online projects. The Internet is certainly useful, especially for older people.

The solution to most problems and fears is found immediately after the pensioner is explained and told all the advantages of a computer and the Internet. Often, older people have to deal with typical difficulties:

  • "I'm scared that I won't be able to learn a computer."

The Internet for older people over 70 is something terrible and incomprehensible. Old people are often firmly convinced that it is simply impossible to master a computer at their age.

We advise you to talk to an elderly relative about this topic. Tell him that a few decades ago computers were available only to narrow specialists. However, today everyone can afford the technique, because its management has been simplified, reliability and practicality have increased. You do not need to be an experienced specialist in order to start using a computer.

The Internet itself has changed. It has become more organized, it has its own system and orderliness, which allowed even users without any experience to understand all the intricacies.

  • "I'm used to reading letters on paper rather than on a screen."

Among the common problems in mastering the computer among the elderly is the problem of reading from the monitor. The habit of reading on paper and discomfort to the eyes do not allow old people to enjoy the process.

Today, this complexity is easily solved by using on-screen settings, thanks to which you can make the font larger, adjust the balance of brightness and color sharpness, and arrange and save the desired bookmarks in the desired order.

  • Keyboard problem.

The keyboard causes a lot of difficulties for the elderly, because it is not easy for them to use the keys. In this case, it is necessary to teach them how to properly handle the mouse, because it is easier to work with. If we talk about typing, then it all depends on practice. The more a pensioner will train, the faster he will master the keyboard.

  • Mouse control.

The modern world is so progressive that even preschoolers manage to quickly master the computer and the Internet. Older people also have nothing to stop them from becoming power users.

Mastering the Internet for older people over 80 should start from simple to complex. To begin with, let the grandfather or grandmother just play some kind of game where you need to do simple mouse manipulations. It is enough to play a couple of games, and the skill will be mastered.

  • It is scary to master a new large amount of information necessary to work with a computer and the Internet.

Such an assumption is an absolute fallacy. To master a computer, a pensioner does not have to memorize all the components and wisdom of using the Internet.

Just think - a person drives a car without even knowing what parts are under the hood, how they function and how to repair them. The same applies to computers - only an elementary set of knowledge is enough for a pensioner. After all, often to solve the most difficult, at first glance, problems, a simple reboot is enough, which does not require the help of a specialist.

At present, an electronic form of communication between the authorities and citizens is being widely introduced in Russia. The country is large, there are many regions, among them there are those in which the level of computerization is quite high, but there are many others where it is more difficult to deal with these issues. It is in them that computer courses for pensioners are now becoming so popular, which, moreover, can be taken absolutely free of charge.

The state is implementing an industry development strategy information technologies, and increasing the literacy of the population in this area is one of its main tasks. They are trying to attract citizens to the Internet, to communicate with relatives and friends with its help; to the use of e-mail, various editors.

The ability of citizens to communicate with government agencies without leaving home, through your home computer. Such communication is characterized by accuracy, increased efficiency and convenience.

The only thing is that a person learns how to deal competently with a laptop and other modern means of communication. And for pensioners, this is just an urgent need, because it makes life much easier.

Especially to improve the level of computer literacy of the population, including pensioners, the Russian version of the international program was involved e-citizen, that is, "Electronic Citizen".

This program was immediately transferred to the regional authorities in order to organize its launch on the ground, to find funds and opportunities for training teachers, equipment, classrooms and other things.

The project proposes to teach citizens, including the elderly and the disabled, how to use a computer, and they are not charged for this. Pensioners get access to modern equipment and information technologies, master the necessary skills to use them.

This gives them the opportunity to feel at a decent level among other citizens, increases their mobility, makes them more free and confident. So there is a direct reason to learn.

In addition, in each city there are, in which computer literacy classes can also be held, for example, in the city library.

The website of each city has information about the regional program "Electronic Citizen". This is, first of all, a phone number, by calling which you can find out whether your application for attending courses will be accepted immediately, or you will have to wait.

Those who wish to apply for participation in the program in advance, groups are formed according to them and classes are planned.

The official website of the Ministry of Transport and Communications has full list settlements in which such free computer courses function.

AT Sverdlovsk region, for example, more than 50 centers operate in various municipalities, including in all major cities region. The same is observed in other subjects of the Russian Federation, and it all depends on how successful things are with financing the needs of the population in a particular region.

In Moscow and St. Petersburg, for example, such courses are more numerous, their programs are wider and cover a wider range of topics.

How is the training going and what will the elderly person be taught?

The educational course within the framework of the "Electronic Citizen" program is held in person. Classes are held in specially equipped classrooms, At least 40 hours are allocated for the entire course.

The course is designed in such a way as to take into account the peculiarities of the age and mentality of pensioners, and at the same time provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills regarding the use of Internet resources.

A specialist who is fluent in the subject will always find a way to convey it to the audience in an extremely understandable and interesting way.
Such specialists, tutors, are specially trained. These are certified teachers who carry out individual approach to each of his subordinates.
In such a favorable environment, pensioners are introduced to what can be most useful to them, namely:

  • work with popular office applications, the most convenient and understandable;
  • searching the Internet for the necessary information using various search engines;
  • use of e-mail;
  • working with Skype, setting it up for yourself and using it;
  • making purchases over the Internet.

At the next stages, course participants are taught electronic communication with local and federal authorities. For example, course participants will learn how to access the site of the president or governor; how to find out details regarding housing and communal services; how to ask a question or apply to the FIU; how to use information and legal systems.

Students are taught how to fill out a declaration, a questionnaire, how to download a form, book a train ticket or a hotel room, how to protect your computer from malware, how to behave on thematic forums.

If there are enthusiasts in the field, then the success of promoting the "Electronic Citizen" program increases dramatically. For example, in the Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous region this project has been operating since 2006, and several stages of this program have already been implemented.

The simplest and most necessary skills make up the first stage. It mainly covers preferential categories of citizens, which include pensioners.

At the second stage, students get the opportunity to organize Personal Area and do business online. For some pensioners, it is acceptable and even tempting to trade without leaving home, especially if they are familiar with the specifics of the profession.

Since 2012, it has become possible to teach students how to use the e-government service (www.gosuslugi.ru) and its regional segment. This course covers a wider audience, it is also of great interest to pensioners.

Here they introduce in detail such an effective tool for obtaining services as the UEC - a universal electronic card. It works both at the state and municipal levels and is the key to a wide range of electronic services.

Course participants are provided with the necessary kit teaching materials. They take an independent test at the end of the class, which shows how much they benefited from the class. In case of successful completion of the test, each student is awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Among retirees there are those who, by the nature of their activities, have come across computers, and they will not consider it necessary for themselves to start with courses, even if they are free.

And others, perhaps, no longer want to go to classes, it’s embarrassing to feel like an inexperienced student in such respectable years. The motivation for avoiding face-to-face courses may vary, but there is still a need to learn how to receive services over the Internet. And then you need to look for other ways, alternative to face-to-face classes.

You need to find courses that are suitable for the topic online or remotely - and take them up. Look for offers, make contact, ask questions. Many of these courses are paid, but they may have a discounted promotion specifically for retirees.

Request to search engine formulated, for example, as follows: “Free computer courses in …” or “Computer literacy training for pensioners for free in …”, and put the name of your city (Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Omsk, etc.). If you know that there is no such service in your city, then all the more you need to look on the Internet.

It happens that in paid courses the first lesson is provided without payment - take part. Perhaps, in the course of the lesson, it turns out that there are special groups for pensioners, preferential ones. Sometimes this is practiced, especially in the regional centers of the Russian Federation.

YouTube, if you own it, can also be very useful resource- which is just not there. Some pensioners, very advanced for their age, communicate, share knowledge with other visitors, acquire their own video channels and even earn money from user views.

Retirees tend to be active and curious people. Having devoted their whole lives to work and raising children, they were constantly busy, and then they suddenly got a lot of free time at their disposal.

Mastering the computer and its capabilities is not only useful for them, but also excitingly interesting. And they are happy to start life anew, almost like the postman Pechkin, but at a higher, absolutely modern level.

In this age of digital technology, it is impossible for the modern generation to imagine life without a computer. A personal computer has long ceased to be a luxury or a subject of use for the elite, now it is a necessary technical gadget, an assistant that allows you to keep up with the times. Children grow up with gadgets, so for them computer literacy is absorbed naturally, but their grandparents have problems with this. It is easy for elderly parents to buy a computer, but not everyone is able to teach them how to use it, since it takes a long time and a lot of patience. But this does not mean that the road to the world of information technology is closed for the older generation. Studying computer literacy for retirees is a complex science that requires skills and practice. This task is best handled by special computer courses for pensioners, where experienced teachers know well how to present this or that material for older people. We invite you to enroll in our computer literacy course for the elderly from the CODDY school in Moscow. This full-time course is adapted to the needs of people of retirement age who want to learn the basics of computer literacy and learn how to use the Internet.

Training in computer courses for pensioners. Why is this needed?

  • Pay utility bills and make purchases in stores without leaving home.
  • Advanced users of retirement age become video bloggers and their own YouTube channel, where they can share their experience, becomes an excellent assistant for them and a source of additional income - more on this in the course.

And although some of the features may seem very difficult at first, novice older users master the basic skills in our course without much difficulty. The main objective of the course is teaching the basics of using a computer and the Internet. Classes are divided into blocks-modules, each of which is devoted to specific topic. Computer literacy training for pensioners starts from the basics, from general concepts, without complex and abstruse terms, without "water" and gradually moving to more difficult questions, all this is accompanied by mandatory practice. Classes are held at a relaxed pace. study groups are completed exclusively by age, which allows our grandparents to be liberated surrounded by peers and learn the material more efficiently and with interest.

The curriculum includes all the aspects of working with a personal computer and the Internet that are necessary for novice users. The training course consists of 3 blocks covering topics such as computer components and controls, applications and explorer built into the operating system, working in a text editor, working with the Internet, navigating and searching for information on the global network, communicating via e-mail, instant messengers and social networks, safety rules and much more.

Computer courses for pensioners in Moscow are effective practical training in working on a computer in small groups, an accessible presentation, a comfortable environment, and a friendly atmosphere. By enrolling in computer literacy courses for the elderly at our school, you acquire only specific applied knowledge and practical skills, without wasting time studying abstract and unnecessary theory.

Do you want your personal computer to become your friend and reliable assistant? Forget about your age! We are waiting for you in the classroom and will be happy to help you discover new opportunities for communication and self-realization with the help of information technology.

How do we know that a student has mastered the program?

During the training, we evaluate both the practical side of the issue (how to do it?) and the understanding of the topic (why and for what).

Students demonstrate their knowledge by solving problems in their own way, explaining algorithms in their own words, helping classmates correct mistakes, and creating presentations on their completed projects.

In 2014, Rostelecom and the Pension Fund of Russia (PFR) signed an agreement on cooperation in teaching pensioners how to use a computer. The purpose of the agreement is to improve the quality of life through teaching computer literacy and working on the Internet, as well as assisting the older generation in obtaining public services in electronic form.

As part of the implementation of the agreement, in 2014 Rostelecom and the Pension Fund of the Russian Federation prepared a special educational manual for the elderly, ABCs of the Internet. The manual was developed by educators, psychologists-gerontologists and IT specialists. The course program is constantly evolving, and the textbook is supplemented with new modules and relevant information.

The manual can be used as a self-instruction manual when working on a computer and on the Internet, as well as a textbook for specialized computer literacy courses for pensioners, which are held throughout Russia. Electronic version The ABC of the Internet textbook is posted on the educational portal www.azbukainterneta.ru. Visual aids, presentations for each topic of the textbook, useful links, guidelines according to the peculiarities of teaching older people, the necessary technical equipment of the classes.

The first courses under the ABC of the Internet program were held in 2014 in Bryansk, Volgograd, Vologda, Stavropol and Tula. Special computer courses were organized for the classes. AT Nizhny Novgorod and Nizhny Novgorod region social protection authorities equipped and provided 128 computer classes for learning on the ABC.

In November 2015, the program was presented in Russian center science and culture in Yerevan. As a result of the event, materials adapted for Russian-speaking pensioners living in the Republic of Armenia appeared on the Azbuka portal.

The Internet portal is visited monthly by over 20 thousand users, 8433 people are registered in the "For Teacher" section. Since 2014, more than 305 thousand pensioners have taken part in the program, of which about 55 thousand people in 2019. In addition, the regions of the Russian Federation use the materials of the program in their own projects. So, for example, in Tyumen region the “Expanding Horizons” program is operating, which takes into account methodological developments and recommendations of the ABC of the Internet program.

The training is divided into two courses: basic - for beginners and advanced - for those who have already mastered the basics of working on a computer and on the Internet. In 2015, modules were published that talk about choosing a home computer and additional equipment to it, recommendations are given on the use of social networks and regional Internet services: sites of regional authorities, enterprises providing housing and communal services. In 2016, the Azbuka portal published materials on financial Internet literacy, job search on the Internet, and programs necessary for employment. In 2017, modules on working on tablets and in video communication programs were developed. Today, the site published the materials of seven modules of the extended training course.

A significant contribution to the development of the project was online seminars for teachers and course organizers on the ABC of the Internet. The first seminar was attended by students from 13 regions, in the seminar, which was held in May 2019, more than 1,400 representatives of regional ministries social policy, employees of libraries and various social institutions, university professors from 51 regions.

The release of ABC Internet is a charitable project for the company: the preparation, publication and free distribution of the textbook allows to increase the number of pensioners who know how to use a computer and work on the Internet, to facilitate older people's access to electronic government services and social services.

In support of the “ABCs of the Internet” project, the annual “Thanks to the Internet!” contest was organized, the participants of which in their works talk about how the Internet is useful for the 50+ audience, how it has changed and improved their lives. At the same time, 81% of the works came from residents of medium and small towns, as well as from rural areas. The oldest participant is 95 years old. 63% of pensioners who completed training at specialized courses received competitive works– 37% of pensioners studied independently, incl. Internet ABC.
