Story

Historically, the JIHT RAS was organized on the basis of the Institute for High Temperatures of the USSR Academy of Sciences (IVTAN). The predecessor of IVTAN was the Laboratory of High Temperatures of the USSR Academy of Sciences (LVT AN), established at the Department of Engineering Thermal Physics of MPEI. Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Vladimir Kirillin was appointed director of the laboratory by the decision of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences dated October 7, 1960, and his deputy, Doctor of Technical Sciences. Alexander Sheindlin. On the basis of the LVT of the Academy of Sciences, by order of the Council of Ministers of the USSR dated May 12, 1962 No. 1186, the Research Institute for High Temperatures (NII VT MPEI) was organized at MPEI.

Council of Ministers of the USSR by its Decree. No. 349r of March 16, 1967, accepted the proposal of the USSR Academy of Sciences to transfer the NII VT MEI from the system of the USSR Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education to the jurisdiction of the USSR Academy of Sciences. A. E. Sheindlin, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, was appointed director of IVTAN. From that moment, IVTAN appeared in the system of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Later, on the basis of IVTAN, the Scientific Association "IVTAN" was formed, and since 1994, by the decision of the Presidium Russian Academy Sciences No. 178 dated October 12, 1993 "On the renaming of the Scientific Association "IVTAN"" it was transformed into the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences (the director of which by that time was Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences V. M. Batenin, and the honorary director - A E. Sheindlin). By 2000, the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences (the chairman of the board of directors of which by that moment was the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences A. N. Lagarkov, who replaced the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences V. M. Batenin in this position) included the following organizations.

The establishment of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences, dates back to 1960. Over the past 50 years, the Institute has evolved from a small scientific laboratory at MPEI into the largest institution - the country's leading scientific center in the field of modern energy and high-temperature thermal physics.

The main activities of the Institute are:

solving the problems of creating an efficient, safe, reliable and environmentally friendly modern energy, including nuclear, hydrogen, aviation, space and cryogenic;

studies of thermophysical, electrophysical, optical and dynamic properties of substances and low-temperature plasma in a wide range of parameters, including extreme ones;

studies of the processes of heat and mass transfer, physical gas and plasma dynamics, transformation of energy types with variable properties of working bodies and high density of energy flows;

research in the field of thermal physics of intense pulsed effects on matter, materials and structures; development of methods and creation of means for generating high energy densities;

research in the field of energy and resource saving and energy efficient technologies, chemical energy, increasing the efficiency of using natural fuels and raw materials, and using renewable energy sources.

Under the scientific guidance of the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences at CHPP-21, JSC Mosenergo, together with the Moscow Machine-Building Production Enterprise Salyut, created and put into operation in 2009 a power unit with a capacity of 60 MW based on a conversion aircraft engine with steam injection into the combustion chamber.

The scientists of the Institute have developed an original environmentally friendly technology for the complex energy-chemical use of natural gas with the simultaneous production of electricity and synthetic liquid fuel.

The Joint Institute for High Temperatures RAS is actively studying the thermodynamic, transport and optical properties of real substances under intense pulsed impacts. On the basis of the Institute there are centers for collective use - the Moscow Regional Explosive Center and the Laser Terawatt Femtosecond Complex.

AT last years A new area of physics, the physics of dusty plasma, has been formed at the JIHT RAS. A special place is occupied by pioneering work on the study of dusty plasma under microgravity conditions, carried out on board the International space station. The Institute is working on plasma medicine.

The JIHT RAS conducts research to develop new hydrogen technologies for energy. Hydrogen-oxygen steam generators have been developed. Power installations for power supply of autonomous consumers are being created on the basis of energy technological complexes using the reaction of hydrothermal oxidation of aluminum.

The Institute employs 450 scientific staff, including 5 academicians, 8 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, about 100 doctors and 200 candidates of sciences. At the JIHT RAS, there are two leading scientific schools s of Russia with grants from the President of Russia.
