Why reading is fashionable and useful. Reading is trendy! Reading will keep you physically healthy

AT last years the slogan "reading is fashionable!" has become increasingly common in the materials of various literary projects and promotions, as well as advertising products created by bookselling organizations and libraries in order to attract potential readers and users. This slogan often sounds from the lips of cultural and political figures.

At first glance, there is nothing wrong with this method of popularizing reading. On the contrary, in someone (who strives to be fashionable), such appeals may well awaken a craving for books. Only now the trend of transferring reading to the category of “fashionable activities” is fraught with some transformation of society's ideas about the essence of this process. Moreover, the transformation is not better side, in which reading begins to be considered as a kind of end in itself - reading for the sake of reading.

There is, though not intentional, but, nevertheless, a clear substitution of concepts. It is extremely important to understand that reading is not an end, but a means! It is important to understand that this is one of the main ways of qualitative self-transformation of a person in a number of areas - aesthetic, cultural, intellectual, etc. Understanding this fact can not only stimulate the need for reading, but also influence its quality, causing the choice of literature, making it more conscious and non-random.

Man learned to write and read a long time ago. We have been using text documents for more than five millennia. With the development of technology, a number of alternative ways of working with information have appeared: audio and video documents, being more accessible for perception, have become a tangible competition to the text. However, these circumstances do not detract from the relevance of reading in modern world. And all this is due to the fact that reading (from whatever medium it is carried out - paper or electronic) has been and remains one of the most effective means of developing the human brain.

Scientific proof of this is the results of research in the field of psychology and neurology, conducted by John Stein, Stanislas Deene, Robert Wilson, Gregory Burns and other scientists from different countries. However, one can also come to a conclusion about the positive impact of reading on brain development on the basis of independent observations: the vast majority of outstanding (in relation to mental capacity) people of the past and present - people reading. And this is no coincidence. If we touch upon the theory of reading, then the cardinal difference between this method of working with information and all others will become obvious.

So, for example, in contrast to obtaining information from a video sequence that gives ready-made images, when reading, there is a consistent perception of a system of written signs, their transformation into words and sentences. In this case, in order to obtain an image, the brain needs to decipher a number of symbols, understand the meaning of individual letters and words, combining them into more voluminous and complex information clusters - phrases and sentences. Then, holding them in short-term memory, correlate them with each other and assemble a single information composition - an image.

Unfortunately, few people think about how complex the work is done by the brain while reading the text and how important this process is for mental development person throughout his life. Perhaps even at school, an understanding of the principles of the impact of reading on the brain should have been laid down, thus forming in children a conscious, not postulated interest in reading. To some extent, this could prevent a number of cases of "sudden departure from books", often observed during the so-called transitional age and often dragging on for a lifetime.

It is known how receptive the teenage consciousness is to vivid images. With the help of modern computer technologies, it is not difficult to visually, easily and colorfully illustrate the processes that occur in the human brain while reading. So, for example, it is possible to show schoolchildren a significant difference in the impact on the brain of information extracted from a text in comparison with information perceived from alternative sources, such as audio and video (it is important to exclude any opposition, and only make a comparison). So, in the minds of children, along with positive emotions received from reading their favorite books, a clear and reasonable idea of the benefits and significance of reading for a person throughout his life would be preserved for a long time.

Perhaps then it will not be necessary after a while to again draw the attention of these people to reading, referring to fashion and other concepts that are not quite comparable with this occupation.

The main trend of the season is self-development. It's not just about education and skill development. In order to independently acquire new knowledge, it is important to have certain qualities and be able to learn. And this is where books can help. Let's try to tell.

Reading develops attention

In order to develop yourself, it is important to be able to focus and hold attention. Books and reading can help develop these skills. Starting small, reading a page a day, you will learn not only to enjoy the story, but to keep your attention on it for a long time, not to be distracted, and to thoroughly absorb information.

Reading increases vocabulary

Reading develops intuitive literacy

When you read a lot, the brain not only remembers new words, but gradually learns how they are spelled. So you become more literate, although you may not know some grammar rules. This hack also works with punctuation.

Reading helps you make friends

Books, even fiction, share knowledge: specific details, relationship issues, references to others. literary works, music, cinema… Information accumulates in memory and subsequently allows you to keep up a conversation even in an unfamiliar company.

Reading develops logical and abstract thinking

While reading, you involuntarily reason, learn to put yourself in the shoes of heroes, look at the same situations and questions with different parties. Reading teaches objectivity. You learn to draw conclusions, build logical chains, predict events and reactions.

As you know, modern girls read little, or rather, they hardly read. The word "read" does not mean reading all kinds of glamorous magazines in order to find out which fur coats - mink or polar fox are in fashion today and which fur coat store will offer the best selection of fur products. Namely, reading in the very sense that it has been from time immemorial. Of course, no one says that modern beauties should sit for hours at volumes of classics or any "abstruse" literature. But reading literature, and not catalogs of fur factories or fashion boutiques, is sometimes worth it. Moreover, recently, girls are valued everywhere, not only outwardly attractive, but also educated to a certain extent.

No wonder they say that the philological faculties of universities are the faculties of brides for diplomats. After all, no diplomat would want to have a wife who is beautiful, but uneducated, who has not read a single book in her life. Girls planning to find a wealthy husband, remember that successful men prefer to see women who are successful in all respects next to them. Ability to maintain a conversation in different interesting topics, to navigate in well-known things (and this is not only a discussion of the latest fashion trends) is appreciated by the males, despite the fact that men allegedly “love with their eyes”.

Again, this does not mean that you need to know by heart all of Brodsky and the release dates of all Dostoevsky's novels. Among classical literature, there are quite a few "light" works of various genres, which are quite easy to read and whose plot will not make you bored. Thanks to the film adaptations of the great novels that have become so popular lately, large quantity people learned about them and even began to read them. This can also be considered as an option to get acquainted with the world of real literature. Well, if everything is classic literature seems too boring for you, there is a large selection modern literature, quite tolerable. We are not talking about the so-called "books" by Robsky, Donskoy and Sobchak. For starters, you can read Coelho, Richard Bach, after all, The Lord of the Rings. The main thing is to take the first step and start at least a little interested in literature. It's very interesting indeed. Yes, now everyone has lost the habit of reading, they think that it is unfashionable, even ashamed, and that is why it is so valued in the modern world and commands respect among successful people. worthy people.

Discussion of the article "Reading is fashionable!"

Tatyana

Damn, I like to read in general, but it's rare that I get exactly the kind of novel that I like. For example, Coelho is philosophical thoughts in dry history. And I want to read about the characters (in an accurate description of the appearance), about the events where everything is painted, these are novels where you live the whole story together with the main character. For example, "The Count of Monte Cristo" (about 1000 pages in small print), but there is one phrase on the very last page, which is worth a lot, for which the whole novel is worth reading !! I strongly recommend !! And give advice on who to read, with such, for example, as Dumas, London (my favorite writers).?

Indeed, nowadays people read less, especially young people. But interesting works- the sea, the world of artistic literature is great, there is so much unread. Reading expands our horizons, enriches inner world. If parents read, then children also become attached to books. So read, experience, enrich yourself spiritually! Sometimes the book turns out to be much more interesting than the film based on its plot.

I completely agree! True, I am more a fan of Vladislav Krapivin (Ural writer, founder of the Caravel detachment, to which, by the way, I myself belong) Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Solzhenitsyn and many other authors also impress me. In addition, a reading person is a smart person .. In what way is it place says that being smart is not fashionable?!!

Lord, who wrote such nonsense !! I was especially struck by the phrase "Yes, everyone has lost the habit of reading now, they think that it is not fashionable, even ashamed" oo.
Yes, I agree that our generation reads less and less. but everyone decides for himself what to read, why, and why.
I am shocked by the behavior and lifestyle of today's youth, although I myself am 18 years old. But I don't care what and how they think about books. because I have always loved to read, and without books, life is empty for me.
I adore Tolstoy, I read War and Peace 2 times, Dostoevsky is generally super !! At least one book should be read by supposedly golden youth !!
Paulo Coelho also enriches readers with the philosophical content of his books. God forbid reading Dontsova, and especially Sobchak !!

More and more experts and specialists are coming to the conclusion that today reading has again become a fashionable activity, attracting millions of people from different ages and social groups. So why 10-15 years ago (or maybe less) pastime reading a book was not as popular as it is now? There are several reasons for this.

Get acquainted with the new work of your favorite writer, read the classics from school curriculum or find a fascinating detective story, reading which you can have a good rest - all this is available to each of us. Any text is currently stored electronically. No need to drive to the opposite side of the city and stand in line to get at the library the right book. It is much easier to turn to numerous online services where you can download for free or purchase any literary production for money. Therefore, the availability of books is naturally considered one of the reasons for the popularity of reading.

Compared to the 90s, it has become easier to purchase books. Today, in every city there are several large second-hand bookstores offering a wide range of literary creations of any genre. There is no need to ask neighbors, friends and classmates if they have a book that interests you, as it used to be.

We should not forget about the active introduction into life of various mobile devices that allow you to take a real library with you, store hundreds and even thousands of books in electronic versions, which you can read at home, at work, in the park, on the road, on the street, etc.

The great interest of the younger generation in books is explained by the fact that often published films or computer games based on a work of art. Naturally, the movie you like prompts you to take the original source - a book, after reading which you can find out more information about your favorite characters and re-experience all the feelings and emotions, worrying about their fate.

Even the fashion industry fuels global interest in literature. Clutch bags imitating book covers with texts of famous classics are in fashion. A number of designers even cover clothes with quotes from works. For example, not so long ago a whole collection of dresses came out, the hem of which was decorated with lines from Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita.

The consciousness of most people has also changed. Everyone today wants to stand out from the crowd, to be brighter, more stylish, smarter and different from others. The times when exotic hairstyles were made for this, they covered their body with tattoos or pierced every part, are gradually fading into the past. Today's fashion dictates different rules. It is important not only to healthy lifestyle life, go to the gym, eat right, etc., but also be erudite enough to finish prestigious university, be able to support any conversation or maintain your own blog on the Internet. Of course, without reading books and constant search new information not enough.

The variety of products also has a positive effect. modern prose describing the problems and conflicts of the present. Not everyone is interested in reading about what happened before, for example, in the Middle Ages or the post-war years. Therefore, most young people turn to the work of Kuatje, Haruki Murakami, Roxanne Robsky, Pelevin, Ulitskaya and others.

Although we are still far from the status of the most reading country in the world, which was once considered the USSR, but interest and love for reading are gradually becoming the main attributes of modern society.
